Teaching nutrition

Teaching nutrition, which falls under the personal health choices strand would have to be one of my favourite topics to teach. Developing and maintaining a healthy diet is imperative, and as teachers, I believe it should be strongly encouraged and discussed on a daily basis. Good nutrition has a major impact on a child’s health, wellbeing and learning. If children are not taught about the benefits of healthy eating and having a consistent diet, their future choices may be negatively affected. I also believe that what students learn about nutrition in the classroom, should be discussed and developed outside the classroom- starting with the canteen. All school canteens should be using fresh, healthy food products that are not processed and are low in sugar content. By having a healthy school canteen, students are able to apply content learnt in the classroom to practice- by making a healthy, wholesome and right food choice.
